Install Ubuntu 8.10 on My Vista

Hoho, I’m so boring with my vista.. Today, I recovery my Vista because it’s so dirty. Then all like new. Hehe. Not only that, I install Ubuntu 8.10 on it. So I have dual booting with my Vista installed first.

It’s pretty simple, but you must do this with carefully. Because you can delete any important file. But don’t worry. I’ll give some instruction for you. Don’t forget, all mistake is yours.

First you must prepare partion for Ubuntu at least 10 gb. In vista you can go into Disk Management > right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management.

Right-click on the main Vista partition, then select Shrink Volume – the Shrink tool will assess how much space can be freed up.

As a rule of thumb Shrink will reduce the main system partition by about 50%. As long as the partition is big enough to begin with (at least 10GB) it should accommodate both operating systems.

Select Shrink and the tool will reduce the volume of the primary partition, leaving the rest of the disk free as unpartitioned space.

Now you have 10GB unpartitioned space(unallocated  space).

Leave it and then, shut down.

Download Ubuntu from http://ubuntu.com. It’s free or you can request cd with free.

Then burn Ubuntu image to CD. Keep Ubuntu CD inserted.

Start computer with booting from CD. Then select install Ubuntu.

Choose language, It’s up to you, just choose your preferred language. Ups’ any Indonesian Language on it. Hoho Nice… But I prefer to choose English. Haha whatever la. Forward it.

Choose Timezone. Because I’m Indonesian. I choose GMT +7 Jakarta of course. hehe. Click Forward.

Choose keyboard lay out by default. Click Forward.

Then Ubuntu will load partition manager to prepare disk space. You must choose Guided – use the largest continuous free space. Then Ubuntu will installed on unallocated space 10GB automatically.  Click Forward.

After that. Fill your identity, like your name and username to login, password, name of your computer. It’s up to you, but you must remember it to login your Ubuntu. Click Forward.

You can migrate user from another operation sistem by import it on the next window. If you don’t migrate any users, leave it empty. Click Forward.

Waiting for installation Ubuntu. Wait till finish and system will shut down. Restart your PC and see boot menu to choose between Ubuntu and Windows Vista.

Finish.. Lalalala enjoy Ubuntu ^^
